Day 2: Tuesday 12th July 2005

Biarritz, Bayonne, Saint Jean Pied de Port, Orisson, 8km walking

Sue in St Jean Pied de Pont

An early morning train ride from Bayonne to Saint Jean Pied de Pont, through magnificent scenery in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The route followed along a river valley. This beautifully sunny day causing the sharpest reflections in the water that I think I have ever seen. Almost like a perfect mirror.

We did not stay in Saint Jean. We decided to begin straight away, keen to really start our Camino. We were going to follow the Route Napolean over the hills.

Very quickly we were walking up hill. For the next couple of hours it was all uphill, and our level of fitness came in to question. It was very hot. How to you train for this? Perhaps an inclined treadmill in a sauna! However the views were stunning and made it all worth while. We had booked to spend the night in the new albergue at Orisson about 8km from Saint Jean. As we were walking in the heat of the early afternoon we felt that was enough for our first day. Breaking us in gently.
